Work items

Everything a project tracks is a work item: epics, features, stories, bugs, improvements, tasks and subtasks. Member and above create and update them; Lead also deletes and assigns.

Types and the hierarchy

TierTypeEstimated inKind of work
0EpicdatesFrom what is under it
1FeaturedatesFrom what is under it
2Storystory pointsNew capability
2BughoursDefect
2Improvementstory pointsImprovement
3TaskhoursFrom the nearest classified item above it
4SubtaskhoursRolls up into its parent

An item sits under a parent on a higher tier. Hours on a task under a bug count as defect effort, because the task takes its kind of work from the bug.

Creating a work item

  1. Choose New work item in the header of the Board, Backlog, Sprints or Work items page.
  2. Pick the type and type a title. PMO Assist lists similar items already in the project as you type, so you can spot a duplicate.
  3. Fill in the form. Its fields, order, defaults and required fields follow the type's create screen, which leads shape in Settings › Screens. Set the Parent to place it in the hierarchy.
  4. Create it. It starts in the workflow's first to-do state and shows on the board straight away.

The work item screen

Clicking a work item opens it in a dialog; its full-page address shows the same screen.

Start and target datesA target date drives flow health.

Changing many at once

On Work items, the backlog and a sprint, tick rows to open the bulk actions bar. One change (status, assignee, priority, sprint or delete) applies to every selected item, with progress as it goes. Refused items stay ticked so you can fix the cause and apply again; Show refused reopens the list.

Filters

Work items, backlog, board and sprints share one filter bar: search by title or number, assignee (including Unassigned), state, state group, type, priority, sprint (including No sprint), and created and due dates. Filters are part of the address, so a filtered view is a link you can share.
